James part 1 FAITH/WORKS

For those willing to risk the dangers, the Concord stagecoach offered three classes of tickets. First-class passengers received service while comfortably seated inside the coach. They could avoid labor and the sight of it. Second-class ticket holders disembarked and either walked or stood along the roadside to observe while others pushed the coach. Third-class passengers were supposed to disembark, roll up their sleeves and push the stagecoach out of the mud or uphill if necessary — without complaint.

The Omaha Herald in 1877 published rules of stagecoach etiquette, including, “Don’t imagine for a moment you are going on a picnic. Expect annoyance, discomfort, and some hardships.
I would like to say to every person who becomes a follower of Christ….
“Congratulations, new believer….. You now have a third-class ticket.”
James 1:1-8 (NIV)
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:

Greetings.

Trials and Temptations
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
Faith Under Pressure
faith-under-pressure
James: –  A QUICK SNAP SHOT AT THE BOOK

famous phrases that often make their way into Christian conversation:

  • “Faith produces steadfastness.”
  • “God cannot be tempted.”
  • “Every good and perfect gift comes from above.”
  • “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”
  • “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
  • “Even the demons believe—and shudder!”
  • “Faith apart from works is dead.”
  • “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
James has been called “the Proverbs of the New Testament.”

Who he is not:
He is not the “James and John, the sons of Zebedee” – Mark 10
He is however;
– Jesus little brother.
– He did not believe Jesus was the promised messiah until after the resurrection.

Jesus and his brothers
“We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?”But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “He’s just a carpenter—Mary’s boy. We’ve known him since he was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does he think he is?”  – Mark 6 (the message)

Vs. 1

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:

Greetings.
Note the very first verse of the book of James is written to the twelve tribes who are SCATTERED .
The greek word that James uses this “scattering is: “Diaspora” – from which we get our words “Dispersed” and “Dispersion”.
diaspora
After the stoning of Stephen in Acts 7 things became pretty crazy for the Christians
Acts 8:1 “They were all scattered ….except the apostles.”
James writes to people who are facing “various trials”.
STUFF GOT STRESSFUL! – It was then and it still is to this day.
STRESS IS……
It’s INEVITABLE.
It’s PREDICTABLE.
It’s PARADOXICAL.
It’s PROFITABLE.
STRESS IS INEVITABLE
inevitable
“count it all joy WHEN you fall into various trails” – Vs 2

Stress is a fact of life….you first experienced it coming out of the birth canal.
It’s not going away, and we all have to deal with it.
It’s not stress that kills us….it’s our reaction to stress that kills us.
As you study James…you will begin to see yourself as the lone recipient of this letter; It’s from God, through James, and to you personally. – Listen to his seasoned ans saged advice and but into practice.
The people James is writing to have just lost their jobs, their homes and their life style.
He is writing to people who are about to crack under the pressure….they are at their wits end because of “Various trails“. – so many problems you don’t know when or where the next one is coming from.
Dads, Moms, kids all stressed out and James is writing to them on how to deal with the stress mess.
In our modern world, the moment we even hear the word stress we tense up, clench our fist, grind our teeth – as if stress where our enemy.
Start think of stress as a friend and not a foe – Stress is here for a purpose.

Yes, Stress is INEVITABLE!

Stress is PREDICTABLE.
predictable
“count it all joy when you fall into various trials.” WHAT?
In other words……Predict it –  Expect it  Prepare for it!

Most of us count it joy when we escape the trials of life, not when we fall into them! And notice that James was not saying to count it joy if we fall into trials. He said we are to count it joy when we fall into them. Experiencing stress is not an if it’s a when. Stress is predictable: it is inevitable, inescapable, unavoidable. We all experience it. We can’t avoid it. Stress happens.

In fact, we can read the Bible from cover to cover, and nowhere will we find the promise that we’re immune to stress or sickness, exempt from trials or tribulations. Some, however, teach falsely that if we’re living the Spirit-filled life, we’ll have only smooth sailing on the sea of God’s will. But may I remind you that our Lord Himself warned, ““In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”” (John 16:33).

Yes, stress is predictable. We can’t avoid stress, but it can actually be good for us. Stress can, for instance, be a motivating factor: it can motivate us to make changes in our life or our lifestyle. However, too much stress coupled with not knowing how to deal with it can be detrimental mentally, spiritually, and physically.
And it is  PARADOXICAL.
paradoxical
James says we should consider it pure “joy” when we face these stressful trials. We generally count it joy when we avoid trials, not face them. The word James employs here means to “think ahead.”
Imagine what it is going to be like when the trial is over.
Job was thinking ahead when he said, He knows the way that I take; and when he has tested me I will come forth as gold (Job 23:10). Job did not consider it a joy in the midst of his stress but he, like James, looked forward to the joy that would follow his trial.
It’s PROFITABLE.
profitable
Mark Batterson on stress

“Just wanted to go on record and thank God for stress! I’ve been spending a lot of time in prayer the last few weeks. And the reason is simple: stress. Without the stress, I don’t think I’d be praying as much as I am.”

Someone has said that a Christian is like a tea bag. He is not worth much until he has been through some hot water. Yes, stressful trials can be profitable for the person in poverty (v.9), the person with plenty (vv.10–11) and the person with pressure (v.12).
In the words of James, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life” (v.2).
I love The Message Translation of Philippians 4:6–“shape your worries into prayers.” You’ve got to take the negative emotions of guilt or jealousy or fear or anxiety and turn them into positive prayers. In a sense, prayer is channeling our emotions to God.

CONCLUSION:
“Don’t imagine for a moment you are going on a picnic. Expect annoyance, discomfort, and some hardships.
I would like to say to every person who becomes a follower of Christ….
“Congratulations,  believer….. You now have a third-class ticket.”

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 (nkjv)
the-race-we-face
For the last two weeks we are diving into the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews is believed to have been written between 63 and 64 A.D.
Hebrews has a total of 13 Chapters, 303 verses and approximately 6,900 words.
Written to the Hebrews were the Christian Jews who resided in Jerusalem at the time.
Author is unknown – scholars think it could have been written possibly by  Paul, Barnabas, Luke, Clement of Rome and Apollos or even  “Priscilla” could have authored the book. She was a teacher and was the wife of Aquila.

SIN is meeting a LEGITIMATE NEED in an ILLEGITIMATE WAY.
You never outgrow temptation, but you can overcome it.

to think of yourself as anything less than WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE is FALSE HUMILITY

The real test of life is not how you START but how you FINISH.

FOUR WAYS TO FINISH THE RACE YOU FACE:

inspiration

vs. 1 –  Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
The race of life and faith is “set before us.”
We are apart of this amazing tribe called the “HUMAN RACE”.
Hebrews says we have surrounding us a “great cloud of witness’s
The message bible puts it this way;
“pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on”
#2 THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR RACE

instructions
It’s gonna be all about ELIMINATION and ENDURANCE.
vs. 1
ELIMINATION
“let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us.”
ENDURANCE
“and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

Run the race at your pace!

Lions or Gazelles?
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
#3 THE IMITATION FOR THE RACE.
imitation
Vs. 2  “ looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.”
Two questions we need to ask ourselves.
WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSING ON?
WHAT IS YOUR FAITH IN?
a. The right focus for your race.
vs 2 “let us fix our eyes on Jesus”.
b. The right faith for your race.
vs. 2  “the author and finisher of your faith.”
When we look to Jesus…..faith is born.
When we gaze on Jesus ….faith is matured.
When we keep our eyes on Jesus ….faith finishes with a win.
“If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed.
If you look within, you’ll be depressed.
If you look at God you’ll be at rest.”
You can rest in your race when your faith is focused on him .
#4 THE INCENTIVES FOR YOUR  RACE

Vs. 2 –  “who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

HE-Brews Part 1

OUTLINE:

THE WORD OF GOD  IS A GOOD BREW!

#1.  IT WILL SUSTAIN YOU.  1:3

#2. IT WILL PROFIT YOU.  4:2

#3.  IT WILL HELP YOU DISCOVER YOU  4:12

Lets enjoy this amazing brew today ….let’s get into his word and join me in some He-BREWS.

#1. God’s Word will SUSTAIN YOU.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.  Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV)
susstains
You can rest in this, because he holds all things together by his powerful word…. he can hold you together today!
If you find a bible that is falling apart at the seams….it most likely belongs to someone whose life isnt.
if you feel like you are drowning in the circumstances of your life, remember Jesus is the life guard that can walk on water.
“all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”  Colossians 1:16,17 (NIV)
#2.  God’s Word will PROFIT YOU…..If.
the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. Hebrews 4:2 (NKJV)
Let’s talk about “PROFIT”.
What is profit? – Profit is what you have left when the transaction is over.
It’s not what you HAVE……It’s what you have left!
prof·it
ˈpräfət/
noun – It’s the gain, its the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent.
* If you broke even you were not profitable…..if you went in the red you were not profitable.
* You are only profitable after you deduct all of your liabilities /overhead and expenses.
So, how can you profit from God’s word?

Hear it?   Read it?   listen to a sermon? – No! that will not profit you unless you do something with it.

Yes, there is God’s part but then there is your part….God’s part is sending his good word to you and your part is  mixing faith with it.

You have to add your faith to his word – You part in the mix is to mix God’s word with faith.

PROTEIN SHAKE  – SHAKE WELL

cup-1b
Everything you need is in it but if you don’t MIX IT UP….
but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. Hebrews 4:2 (NKJV)

faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
By Faith  we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. – Hebrews 11:2
By Faith  By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned. – Hebrews 11:29
By Faith  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. – Hebrews 11:30
without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. – Hebrews 11:6
What is your response ……when the word of God get around you?
What is your response …. when the word of God gets in you?

Does it move you to action?
Does it call you to a higher purpose?
Does it stir you do something about something?

Faith without works is dead – James 2:17
MIX IT UP!
#3.  IT WILL HELP YOU DISCOVER YOU  4:12

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
hebrews3
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” (James 1:22-25 NIV)

James calls God’s Word a mirror. The mirror helps us evaluate ourselves. Once you look at a mirror, you can decide if you need to make any changes before you leave for the day. The Bible helps us do that, too.

You can look at the Bible in one of two ways. You can glance at the mirror or gaze into it. On the old TV show “Happy Days,” the Fonz would glance at the mirror. He’d walk past the mirror, stop, look into it, and say, “Hey!” He didn’t have to do anything else. He was pure perfection. He just needed a glance.

That’s not the way you look into God’s Word. You don’t just glance at the Word of God in a rushed, hurried manner and then leave. Glancing at God’s Word won’t change your life.

Do you want a life that God blesses? It all starts with gazing into God’s Word. James 1:22-25 gives you the blueprint for how to study God’s Word in a way that he blesses.

  • Read your Bible. “… whoever looks intently …”
  • Review the Bible. “… and continues in it …”
  • Remember the Bible. “… not forgetting what they have heard …”
  • Respond to the Bible. “… but doing it …”

THE WORD OF GOD  IS A GOOD BREW!

#1.  IT WILL SUSTAIN YOU.  1:3
#2. IT WILL PROFIT YOU.  4:2
#3.  IT WILL HELP YOU DISCOVER YOU  4:12

Titus 2
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith,in love and in endurance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousnessand soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

The word “teach” is used seven times in 15 verses

1. OLD DOGS – NEW TRICKS.

vs. 2,3  Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith,in love and in endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands.

TITUS – PART 1 – Titus is the shortest of the the three pastoral letters.
The first chapter is to Titus and the last two are to the church at Crete.

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not liepromised before the beginning of time, and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior, To Titus, my true son in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. – Titus 1:1-4
A TRAIL MAP FOR YOUR LIFE AND PURPOSE.
GOD’S WRITTEN WORD.
The most reliable trail map you can get for your life: The SCRIPTURES .
If you have been trying to navigate life without this trail map, you are at risk!
You know, it really doesn’t matter if you are religious or not, you have to admit that the Bible is the most unique in all of history.
One estimate suggests there are about 50 Bibles are sold every minute.
That’s a popular trail map. I wonder why?
It has been translated into 2,018 languages.
It’s authorship: The OT consists of 39 books, -the work of at least 30 authors writing over a period of a 1000 years plus. Writers were historians, lawyers, poets, philosophers and prophets.
The NT consists of 27 books; the work of 8 authors, 5 of which were eyewitness Apostles of Jesus and 3 were associates of those Apostles.
Some really great minds
Yet, despite being written over a combined period of 1600 years, over 40 authors from different backgrounds, cultures, personalities and abilities, there is striking continuity between the OT and NT ….ONE MAIN STREAM OF THOUGHT IS THIS:
GOD LOVES US, SUPPORTS US, WANTS TO DEVELOP US WANTS A RELATIONSHIP WITH US!

You can trust God’s Trail map because:
trust
1. HE DOES NOT AND CANNOT LIE.
lie
vs. 2 “in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.”
2. YOU WON’T GET LOST WITH HIM.
lost
Jesus speaks to us about three kinds of “lostness” in Luke 15
The Parable of the Lost Sheep. – (gradual)
The Parable of the Lost Coin. – (neglectful)
The Parable of the Lost Son. – (intentional)
John 9:25  “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

3. THE VIEW IS SPECTACULAR.
 spectacular
view
God uses uncertainty to chase us out into the open where we can find Him all over again.
Romans 12:1-2 –  Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

2 Timothy 4:1,2  – in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season;

Romans 8:31  – In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us?

2 Peter 1:5   In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises.

4. MORE THAN A MAP.
more-than-a-map
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrew 4:12

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path – Psalm 119:105

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isaiah 40:8

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  John 1:1&14

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” –  Matthew 13:45,46
God created us to connect with Him and to not just WORK in the garden but WALK with Him in it.
Genesis 3:8 God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Were pretty good at creating the CONTAINER but don’t get to the CONTENTS in the container.
“People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only … they reach the top, that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. – Thomas Merton
Stephen R. Covey — ‘If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.’

#1. SEEK IT.
“the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls”. vs. 45
seek
The pearl of great price ….that is always hidden inside this lovely but passing shell.
Sure, the shell is important … we need to construct the container …but God made us to be more than an empty shell.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:5
“people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.” Luke 17:21
” seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
” Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6
#2. FIND IT.
” when he had found one pearl of great price”. – vs. 46
find-it
Good or God?
God is seeking those who hear His call to a life of worship. Those who heed are those who will walk in His presence. They will know Him intimately as He will manifest Himself to them.
When eve ate of the ”  “when the woman saw that the tree was good” – Genesis 3:6
The good is always the enemy of the best.
#3. BUY IT.
“He went and sold all that he had and bought it.” – vs. 46
buy-it
” the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” –  Matthew 13:45,46
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” – Mark 8:36
“Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:7
