What does a greeter look like at Discovery Church?

steve-x

What is so important about being a greeter at Discovery Church Prescott?

Here are a few pointers.
We never get a second chance to make a first impression so this is important each Sunday.
Be early – (9:40).

Smile and be genuine. You are the very first impression that many people have of our church.
Welcome them like you’d welcome them if they were coming over to your house.
Handshakes are appropriate but don’t force them. Some people don’t like to shake hands.
Remember that people come to church for many reasons. Some are hurting, some are skeptical, sometimes they are just “bringing the kids”. A warm and friendly welcome will go a long way to breaking down walls and allowing them to get the most out of their time at Discovery.
Keep an eye out for first time guests. They should be our priority. We love our regular attenders too, but they don’t need as much help finding the restrooms for example. There should be two or more guides floating that can guide the first time guests to their seats, to the kids area, to the restrooms or wherever else they might need to go. If no other greeter is available to guide them, don’t hesitate to enlist the help of other church members/regular attenders and introduce the visitor to them and ask them to help.
It’s very tempting to get caught up in conversations with friends. We need to remember that we have a job to do. Invite your friends help you with your job.
Help and assist elderly and families with children
Keep your eyes open for other situations that need attention (medical situations, safety situations, etc.)
Got a good idea of how something can be improved? We are always looking for new ideas.
Have fun and love the people that you get to serve. Be energetic. God is an alive and exciting God, Discovery is too.
Thank you for considering serving your church in this very vital area.
Remember, hospitality is Gods idea. – Hebrews13:2
If you guys are interested in serving in this ministry txt me an “I’m in” txt and let’s have a brief meeting after service next week.

Thank you for considering helping us make discovery a better place for people to find a community of faith, hope and love.

Never assume that anybody “knows” anything.

The need for good communication
Illustration of my child hood – A guy walking down a street one day noticed a man struggling with a washing machine in the doorway of his home. When he volunteered to help, the homeowner was overjoyed. After several minutes of fruitless struggle the man said to the homeowner, “We’ll never get this washing machine in there.” To which the homeowner replied in amazement, “In? I’m trying to get it out!”

Cooperation is impossible without good communication. And that principle holds whether it’s in your home, your business or your church. Never assume that anybody “knows” anything. The truth is, some people are afraid to admit that they don’t know lest they be ridiculed. Others need more time and personal attention before they “get it.” If you’re a fast-tracker with a day timer and a short fuse, people won’t feel comfortable asking for your help. So, if the job’s not getting done right, the problem could be your inability to communicate clearly and consistently, rather than their inability to do the job properly.
Without clear communication two things happen:

(1) The right people get discouraged and quit, like one worker who complained, “I feel like I’m part of a mushroom farm; left completely in the dark and fed manure from time to time!”

(2) The wrong people become empowered, and chaos results. So, if there’s strife and confusion where you live and work, rather than harmony and clear direction, go back and read Paul’s thoughts on good communication: “I appeal to you…that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Women’s Small Group Notes for Monday Night

Monday night 7:00 P.M. we are looking into a study of women in the Bible.
Mary-A Favored Woman
Luke 1:30 “You have found favor with God.”
Luke 1:46 “ My soul magnifies the Lord.”

What Do We Know About Mary:
She was a virgin-unmarried and pure.  That was the “religious law” of the day
She was humble, from a small village, and uneducated
She was devoted believer
She was a faithful Jew-from the lineage of David
She was engaged to Joseph– engagements were legally binding and lasted at least a year
What Did God See As Useful:
1. She understood turning points and what they meant
Her acceptance didn’t need the “hows” and “whys”
**Sometimes turning points can shake us to the core.
2. Mary had the right heart to face the challenge
3. Mary had an attitude of acceptance– she accepted God’s plan without knowing the outcome
How Did God’s Plan Change Her Life:
She would be pregnant before she was married. Huge social burden
She would be branded as a fornicator
She would have trouble with Joseph
Her home would be blended and the community would see them as different
Her child would cause violent reactions in the hearts of people
Her soul would be pierced with great sorrow
Mary’s response to God was worship   Luke 1:46-55
Our “gift” of worship to Him Should Include:
1. Time in His Word, in service, in prayer
2. Money for His kingdom
3. Faith for the future
4. Witnessing to the lost
See you  there.

You Can Have A Happy Home – part 5

You Can Have A Happy Home
Part 5

Steve Lummer

happy-home-2

Here is the outline  – the video will be up on Monday.

Luke 2:8-14
There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, 10 but the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 11 This very day in David’s town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! 12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven and peace on earth and good will towards men!”

Duke University did a study on “peace of mind.” Factors found to contribute greatly to emotional and mental stability are:

1. The absence of suspicion and resentment. Nursing a grudge was a major factor in unhappiness.
2. Not living in the past. An unwholesome preoccupation with old mistakes and failures leads to depression.
3. Not wasting time and energy fighting conditions you cannot change. Cooperate with life, instead of trying to run away from it.
4. Force yourself to stay involved with the living world. Resist the temptation to withdraw and become reclusive during periods of emotional stress.
5. Refuse to indulge in self-pity when life hands you a raw deal. Accept the fact that nobody gets through life without some sorrow and misfortune.
6. Cultivate the old-fashioned virtues—love, humor, compassion and loyalty
7. Do not expect too much of yourself. When there is too wide a gap between self-expectation and your ability to meet the goals you have set, feelings of inadequacy are inevitable.
8. Find something bigger than yourself to believe in. Self-centered egotistical people score lowest in any test for measuring happiness.

WHY DO WE NEED JESUS ?

James 4:1-2 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.

WE CAN WIN. ….WE CAN LOSE …OR WE CAN HAVE PEACE
Illus – having a “war” or “argument” in the car with your wife.
When you think you have won , when actually you have really lost.

Luke 2:52 – And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

John 14:27 – “Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.

The two kinds of peace
PEACE WITH GOD – PEACE OF GOD

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ Romans 5:1 (niv)

Colossians 3:15 – “Let the peace of God RULE your hearts.”

“Peace is a Place ….Its an issue of “proximity”. – Matthew 19:26 – “with God all things are possible.”

The video to this message will be on line Monday.

WATER BAPTISM… what it looks like and what it means at Discovery Church

What  does WATER BAPTISM look like and what does it mean At Discovery Church Prescott?

water-baptism

Are you considering taking the plunge and getting baptized in water?

Water baptism is a way for believers to outwardly express what God has done in their heart and lives in the presence of other believers. When you are baptized in water, you are identifying yourself with Jesus. It is an outward expression of an inward experience.

Family and friends are encouraged to attend and celebrate this significant decision.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who should be water baptized?
If you have just made a Fresh Start with God and accepted Jesus as Lord of your life, you should be baptized. If you were baptized as a child before you understood what you were doing, or if you just rededicated your life to the Lord, then you should consider being baptized again.

Why should we be water baptized?
We should be water baptized because Jesus was baptized and He is our example and because He commanded us to be baptized.

Mark 1:9 – At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Matthew 28:19 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism was the first thing believers did in the early church after they believed in and confessed Jesus as Lord of their life.

Acts 8:35-38 – Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

What does Water Baptism represent?
It’s an act of obedience and an outward symbol that represents what Jesus has done in us and for us. It doesn’t bring us into a relationship with Christ, only faith does that.

Colossians 2:12 – For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ.

Water Baptism represents 3 things:
1. Death – Specifically Jesus’ death. Christ died on the cross for you. Revelation 1:5 says His blood washes away our sins. Romans 6 says that we died to sin and no longer live in it. Our old nature was crucified with Him. The water is a symbol of washing away the old person.

2. Burial- Going under the water represents His burial. Christ was buried and was in the tomb for 3 days. Our old nature and sin habits are buried with Him.

3. Resurrection – When you come out of the water. We are raised with Him and now live a new life in Christ.

Why do we have to go under water?
We go under water because Jesus did. The word baptism is Baptizo in Greek which means to immerse or submerge.

Matthew 3:16 – As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.

Who is eligible for water baptism?
As Phillip says in Acts 8:37, the only requirement for water baptism is faith in Jesus Christ. Believing that He is the son of God and through his death, burial and resurrection, anyone can receive eternal life. Without such faith, water baptism just becomes a meaningless ritual.

Does water Baptism literally wash away my sin?
Only the blood of Jesus washes away our sin.

Ephesians 1:7 – In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.

I was water baptized as a baby, isn’t that good enough?
It could be considered a gesture of dedication by your parents but faith and repentance are both necessary ingredients as indicated in Acts 8:37.

Is water baptism optional?
As a fully devoted follower…No, Jesus both commanded and modeled water Baptism in the Bible.

Can my child be water baptized?
We advise parents to wait until their child is asking to be water baptized. This is usually a good indication that they are ready to be baptized and it will be a spiritual milestone in their life. While younger children under the age of 5 can have a relationship with Jesus, they will not necessarily remember or understand the significance of the event, so we encourage parents to wait until they are a little older.

We celebrate with you in your decision to follow Christ in water baptism.

See you in the water.

At Men’s Cafe we have been visiting the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society. In the film we were challenged by this quote.

leaf

“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, “O me! O life!… of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless… of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?” Answer. That you are here – that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?”

Over the next few blog post we have guest bloggers who will contribute their verse.

We thank them.

Today’s guest blogger is Toby York.

Fear, life, pain, love, happiness
Life and death intertwined in a mind of questions.

Heaven…

While I believe it exists and strive each day to earn my right…
I don’t care to see it anytime soon.

Love, compassion and dreams keep me alive.
Life is filled with possibilities, experiences and again fears.

What then is failure but experience and opportunity.
Why does it hurt so many and why is the fear of it such a driving force.

Life is lived in passing moments.
Their depth determined by our ability to understand.

I strive to understand.
Myself, others, nature and of course God.

Maybe the best answer IS love.
Deeper love of Him, ourselves and others equals that depth of understanding.

Together we soar above the fears and failures.
We dive deep into understanding and we love to the very depths of life.

With love compassion is possible.
Compassion for those who hurt us and themselves.

With compassion we walk in others shoes.
And abate our solitary existence.

Compassion condemns control.
For even He has created free will.

Free will to love, walk, succeed.
Free will to live, to soar, to understand.
