Guest blogger Rick Malm

I met Rick Malm in the fall of 2012 in Yosemite National Park. We climbed Half Dome together and then found out we were raise in the same community in the mid west.

I wanted to share his insight through one of his latest writings.

Enjoy.

“I just wrote to one of our dear missionaries, a single woman plowing hard ground in Spain, who is going through some intense trials right now. As I wrote, I thought perhaps others might benefit from what I shared with her. So here it is:
———-
I know it is a stressful time for the ministry but it is in those stressful times that God produces good fruit in our lives. We have been going through that personally also but finding God faithful through it all.

Something He shared with me. A principle you see in the Word is that life only comes out of death. A seed has to “die” to reproduce. Jesus had to die or He would have remained the only son of God. His death brought many sons and daughters into the kingdom.

In other words, until there is death there can be no multiplication. But, any area of our life that dies is now a candidate for resurrection power. And just like Christ’s resurrected body was so much more glorious than the earthly tent, so, anything, any part of our life or ministry that dies, can now be resurrected far more glorious. It may not look the same but it will be far more fruitful and productive and glorious than it ever could have been if it had not died.

So, we must embrace the death of vision, even of hope. By doing so, we are embracing God and casting all our trust and hope upon Him. I pray that casts some light into a dark night. St John of the Cross spoke of a night that can be brighter than the day. Because, in that night we discover God in more intimate ways and He becomes a brilliant glow in our soul.”

I am writing these notes for this blog from my tent on the cliffs of Mooney Falls in Havasupai….so forgive me if I sound a little “out there”….The temps tonight are in the mid teens, the Supai river & Mooney falls are making such an amazing sound and there is a beautiful full moon tonight…..It’s a perfect blog writing moment.

As you may already know, we will be launching Discovery Church March of 2013. Before we start such a venture, I am asking friends of Discovery to join Brenda and I in a 21 day fast .

We are asking for direction, guidance and favor in this endeavor.
The 21 day Daniel fast will begin Sunday night @ mid-night January 6th and go through Sunday January 27th Breakfast at 9:00 AM.

Many friends have ask me for a “shopping” list or “menu” for a resource.

So I will do my best from here to update us on our informal shopping guidelines.

The concept of a Daniel fast comes from Daniel 1:8-14, “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, but the official told Daniel, ‘I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.’

Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, ‘Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.’ So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.”

Here are some informal menu helps for the 21 day Daniel fast.

In A Time Of Tragedy

collins art

This art by Jeremy Collins gives us what no words can express.

In light of the recent tragedy and school shooting, we find ourselves at a loss for words but yet full of emotion and grief.

Our message today @Discovery Church  is simply titled “In Times Of Tragedy”

FACTS ABOUT THE CRISIS OF LIFE
1. Crisis are INEVITABLE – James 1:2 ” “when all kinds of trials come your way
2. Crisis are UNPREDICTABLE – Matthew 8:24 “Suddenly, a terrible storm camp up.”
3. Crisis are IMPARTIAL – Matthew 5:45 It rains on the just and the unjust.”

What Traumatic events do to us
They Shatters life’s ASSUMPTIONS – They conjures up GUILT – They produces a sense of FATE

1. EVIL IS RAMPANT
John 17:15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

2. GOD IS IN CONTROL
Psalm 103:19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

3. LIFE IS FRAGILE
Luke 13:1-5 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

4. GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY.
Proverbs 3:5,6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight

REEDS SHAKEN IN THE WIND OR OAKS OF SUPPORT?
Matthew 11:7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

GOD’S CALLING IS ON US

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. 4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Isaiah 61:3-4 (NIV)
When tragedy strikes …that is the time for all of us  to take on the Spirit of Christ  and;

REBUILD

A REMINDER TO MYSELF

I just  read Bob Gass’s devotional to pastors.

After 32 years in pastoral  ministry, it helps to remember who you are and what your purpose is and not get distracted .

“Do your own work well…don’t compare yourself with others.” Galatians 6:4 CEV

“Don’t let it happen to you .
Sally Morgenthaler writes; “Pastors are seen as givers, not takers…shepherds, counselors who visit the sick and weep with the bereaved…if someone dies while the pastor’s on vacation, he comes home. But here’s the reality; a well-meaning pastor can work 80-hour weeks…and still not be able to please his flock. When [he] works hard only to be rewarded with conflict and dissatisfaction, the unrelenting disappointment can push even the most idealistic well-balanced clergy to believe he deserves better. Entrepreneurial church wisdom says a pastor must be…a risk-taker…innovator…spiritual guide…top-of-the-heap speaker…and if [he] doesn’t have the…sole-visionary style…he’ll become someone else, invalidate and dismiss his own gifts…God-given leadership style…strengths and passions…to emulate the large church pastor he’s admired from afar.” Do you recognize yourself in any of this?
Pastor, try to realize this: the enemy wants you to (1) conform to outside expectations; (2) compare yourself to others. In fact, if you’ve lost your joy it’s probably due to one of those two things. The Psalmist says, “Don’t bother with those who climb the ladder, who elbow their way to the top” (Ps 37:7 TM). And Paul adds, “Do your own work well…don’t compare yourself with others.” God knew exactly what He was doing when He made you who you are! Again Paul writes, “What right have you…to say…’Why did you shape me like this?’…a potter can do what he likes with the clay!” (See Ro 9:20-21 TM). Instead of struggling to be something you’re not, ignore your critics and build on who you are.”

“Go ahead and Jump”

” Snowflakes are fragile alone, but together can shut down a city. …. You guys are a bunch of flakes”

“God loves you this much!”

My words are very short on this blog post …. but a picture IS worth a thousand words.

PRAYERS KIDS PRAY

Brenda and i have pastored for over thirty years and we have heard some pretty crazy stuff come out of the mouths of people.

We have also heard some amazing stuff come out of the mouths of people but the ones we really love are the prayers kids pray.

Here are some examples.

Dear God: Please send a new baby for Mommy. The new baby you sent last week cries too much. Debbie, 7

Dear God: Who did you make smarter? Boys or girls? My sister and I want to know. Jimmy, 6

Dear God: How many angels are there in heaven? I would like to be the first kid in my class to know the answer. Norma, 8

Dear God: This is my prayer. Could you please give my brother some brains. So far he doesn’t have any. Angela, 8

Dear Lord: Thank you for the nice day today. You even fooled the TV weather man. Hank, 7

Dear God: Please bring me a new brother. The one I got socks me all the time. Agnes, 6

Dear God: Please help me is school. I need help in spelling, adding, history, geography and writing. I don’t need help in anything else. Lois, 9

Dear God: Do you have any helpers in Heaven? I would like to be one of Your helpers in Heaven when I have summer vacation. Natalie, 7

Dear Lord; Tomorrow is my birthday. Could you please put a rainbow in the sky? Susan, 9

Dear God: I need a raise in my allowance. Could you have one of your angels tell my father. Thank you. David, 7

Dear God; I am saying my prayers for me and my brother, Billy, because Billy is six months old and he can’t do anything but sleep and wet his diapers. Diane, 8

Thank God for Kids.

Three Cents And A Dream

In 1910, a baby girl named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in Albania. As a teenager she felt called to ministry. She did her training in Ireland and India. One day she approached her superiors and said, “I have three pennies and a dream from God to build an orphanage.” Her superiors said, “You can’t build an orphanage with three pennies. With three pennies you can’t do anything.” Agnes smiled and said, “I know. But with God and three pennies I can do anything.” For fifty years, Agnes worked among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta, India. In 1979, Agnes, known to the rest of the world as Mother Teresa, won the Nobel Peace Prize.

How does such a diminutive woman become one of the most recognizable and most revered women in the world? How does a woman with three pennies end up inspiring people to give billions of dollars to charity?

Never underestimate someone with a God-given dream!

“Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”

“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.”

“Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own.”

“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.”

“I try to give to the poor people for love what the rich could get for money. No, I wouldn’t touch a leper for a thousand pounds; yet I willingly cure him for the love of God.

“I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor. Do you know your next door neighbor?”

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (Mother Teresa)
