The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  – Psalm 19:1‑6

In A Time Of Tragedy

collins art

This art by Jeremy Collins gives us what no words can express.

In light of the recent tragedy and school shooting, we find ourselves at a loss for words but yet full of emotion and grief.

Our message today @Discovery Church  is simply titled “In Times Of Tragedy”

FACTS ABOUT THE CRISIS OF LIFE
1. Crisis are INEVITABLE – James 1:2 ” “when all kinds of trials come your way
2. Crisis are UNPREDICTABLE – Matthew 8:24 “Suddenly, a terrible storm camp up.”
3. Crisis are IMPARTIAL – Matthew 5:45 It rains on the just and the unjust.”

What Traumatic events do to us
They Shatters life’s ASSUMPTIONS – They conjures up GUILT – They produces a sense of FATE

1. EVIL IS RAMPANT
John 17:15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

2. GOD IS IN CONTROL
Psalm 103:19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

3. LIFE IS FRAGILE
Luke 13:1-5 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

4. GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY.
Proverbs 3:5,6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight

REEDS SHAKEN IN THE WIND OR OAKS OF SUPPORT?
Matthew 11:7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

GOD’S CALLING IS ON US

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. 4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Isaiah 61:3-4 (NIV)
When tragedy strikes …that is the time for all of us  to take on the Spirit of Christ  and;

REBUILD

Both and ….. Not either or

A friend of mine said to me one time,  “I’d rather be on my mountain bike thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my mountain bike ..”

I hear that kind of statement almost every week.  It’s this tension between having time in the outdoors and being a person that attends a “church” meeting once a week.”

I used to struggle with it, but the more I think about it the more I like it.

This issue is nothing new.

I came across an interesting read out of John Wesley’s paper blog he wrote from May 5th to June 2nd sometime in the 1730’s.

wesley outside

From the Diary of John Wesley

Sunday, A.M., May 5
Preached in St. Anne’s. Was asked not to come back anymore.

Sunday, P.M., May 5
Preached in St. John’s. Deacons said “Get out and stay out.”

Sunday, A.M., May 12
Preached in St. Jude’s. Can’t go back there, either.

Sunday, A.M., May 19
Preached in St. Somebody Else’s. Deacons called special meeting and said I couldn’t return.

Sunday, P.M., May 19
Preached on street. Kicked off street.

Sunday, A.M., May 26
Preached in meadow. Chased out of meadow as bull was turned loose during service.

Sunday, A.M., June 2
Preached out at the edge of town. Kicked off the highway.

Sunday, P.M., June 2
Afternoon, preached in a pasture. Ten thousand people came out to hear me.

As I study Wesley, I find that much of his ministry and preaching were done outside.

Yes, he preached in some church buildings, but you can see where he and his brother Charles as well as George Whitefield used the country side as their pulpit. I believe they were adapting to the model’s  other wilderness preachers like Jesus and John the Baptist.

Ummmmmmm – It’s  “both and ….. Not either or.”

If you like a traditional church service inside a building,  you got it…. or, if you like nature and the thought of sitting in the pew bores you to tears…. we got you covered.

Starting in March of 2013,  we will offer one church with a multi locations approach.

Both inside and out.

Storms of life

The Weather Vane

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

weather vane  – is an instrument for showing the direction of the wind .

This year two guys in my church presented Brenda and I a weather vane for pastor appreciation month.
Wow, this thing is beautiful and has a real special meaning for Brenda and I.

We have been through a real testing season in our lives .  Without getting into the details, I will just say is was a LONG LONG season of trials, test and storms.
As a couple, we prevailed long enough to come out the other side and can now look back and say wow….”we never want to do that again!” (can you relate?)
We have found out over the past five years that storms can really help you with understanding somethings.
1. They will define you.
2. They will let you know what your core values are.
3. They will help you get rid of things you don’t really need.
4. They let you know who you can count on and who are your fair weather friends.
5. 70% of people in your life will not even know or care you are going through it.  29% of people will feel like you deserve it and 1% of people in your life will actually care and have compassion on you.
Here is an amazing scripture found in Acts 27:14 that will let you know that God will bring you through the storm!

“There arose against us…Euroclydon.” Acts 27:14

Euroclydon! It’s the only storm named in Scripture. It means “typhoon,” and Paul had to sail through it to reach his destiny. Observe:

(1) To reach your goal you’ll have to go through storms. “When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved” (Acts 27:20 NIV). There will be days when you’ll wonder how you’re going to make it. But by God’s grace you will!

(2) Storms reveal how well you know God. “Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul,'” (Acts 27:23-24 NIV). It’s the tough times that reveal the strength of your God-connection.

(3) God can make a success out of a shipwreck. Notice some important things in this story:
(a) Sometimes you’ll have to throw stuff overboard (See Acts 27:18).
(b) In spite of your best efforts you’ll occasionally run aground (See Acts 27:26).
(c) You must remember what God told you and stand on it (See Acts 27:25).

(4) Often the worst thing that could have happened turns out for the best. God used this shipwreck to reach Malta with the Gospel. And notice what happened to Paul and his traveling companions as they left that island: “They honored us…and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed” (Acts 28:10 NIV). Stop worrying, God will provide what you need in ways that amaze you. If you’re His child you’re not the victim of circumstances. Your future is not in the hands of people, it’s in the hands of God. And what He owns, He takes care of!

Every time I pull into my drive in my car or after a bike ride I will look up at that weather vane and be reminded of  this.

A PREVAILING faith + a FAITHFUL God = a TESTED and Stronger person.

My test will be my testimony.

Don’t give up on your dream.

Steve

Just a side note.

Riding my Form Prevail 29er in Sedona – Yes, I bought a bike  from FORM cycles  named “Prevail” to help me prevail through the storm.

Think what you want….. but there were many a time when I was out in the forest alone where it spoke to me and maybe kept me moving forward when everything seemed to be a confusing night mare.

Do what ever it takes.

THE RAINBOW RIM/GRAND CANYON RIDE

We planned this trip to take place the first part of October so we could still get there in time for the color change of the leaves.

The timing was perfect,

After ride on some amazing singletrack through the full colors the trail would then open up to the miles of Grand views of color.

This view is from the north rim looking toward the south rim. The south rim is about 20 miles away and about 1000 feet below the north rim.

Dave Sewell and his new Rocky Mtn 29er. _ This guy never gets lost…He is a human compass.

One of my favorite moments.

Now for a few pics of our campsite with no fees and campfires allowed.

One of the coolest things was see a California Condor…. This is CC #92.

We are planning another trip to the north rim next October.

Here are the Strava maps.

A REMINDER TO MYSELF

I just  read Bob Gass’s devotional to pastors.

After 32 years in pastoral  ministry, it helps to remember who you are and what your purpose is and not get distracted .

“Do your own work well…don’t compare yourself with others.” Galatians 6:4 CEV

“Don’t let it happen to you .
Sally Morgenthaler writes; “Pastors are seen as givers, not takers…shepherds, counselors who visit the sick and weep with the bereaved…if someone dies while the pastor’s on vacation, he comes home. But here’s the reality; a well-meaning pastor can work 80-hour weeks…and still not be able to please his flock. When [he] works hard only to be rewarded with conflict and dissatisfaction, the unrelenting disappointment can push even the most idealistic well-balanced clergy to believe he deserves better. Entrepreneurial church wisdom says a pastor must be…a risk-taker…innovator…spiritual guide…top-of-the-heap speaker…and if [he] doesn’t have the…sole-visionary style…he’ll become someone else, invalidate and dismiss his own gifts…God-given leadership style…strengths and passions…to emulate the large church pastor he’s admired from afar.” Do you recognize yourself in any of this?
Pastor, try to realize this: the enemy wants you to (1) conform to outside expectations; (2) compare yourself to others. In fact, if you’ve lost your joy it’s probably due to one of those two things. The Psalmist says, “Don’t bother with those who climb the ladder, who elbow their way to the top” (Ps 37:7 TM). And Paul adds, “Do your own work well…don’t compare yourself with others.” God knew exactly what He was doing when He made you who you are! Again Paul writes, “What right have you…to say…’Why did you shape me like this?’…a potter can do what he likes with the clay!” (See Ro 9:20-21 TM). Instead of struggling to be something you’re not, ignore your critics and build on who you are.”
