Perspective changes everything. It is sometimes hard to appreciate how awesome people are and how awesome

God is without seeing the bigger picture. Although I don’t want to dwell on the “carnage” of my life, it does put blessings and courage into perspective. So here is a brief summary:
I have been* bound and gagged, *Had a loaded gun pointed at my face more than once, *Present inside the scene of several drug raids, *Witnessed many assaults resulting in broken fingers, arms and noses and even *witnessed a stabbing which occurred at one of many addresses I lived as a child.
*My father died at age 28 after serving in Viet Nam, (Agent Orange)
*I was raised by a drug addict, suicidal mother who cut her own wrists in broad day-light in front of her three children.
*Survived serious emotional and physical abuse as a child and* had two abusive boyfriends and was the victim of an armed robbery all before age 19.
I left home at age 16 and managed to become only the 3rd high school graduate in my entire family tree at the time.
My adversarial childhood fashioned a gritty and tenacious child of God.
Though I had determined NOT to marry or have children my mind and heart were changed by God when he brought Mark into my life (AWE-smile, LOL,). Our 27 years together has had its own challenges: many due to my distrust in people and some due to his charisma and charm.
* We have not always agreed on how to raise the kids or keep the house. *We have had two tornadoes hit our home while the boys and I were inside and Mark was at work. *We lived through consecutive years of joblessness which led to bankruptcy and foreclosure which in turn led to homelessness which although brief was a test of our faith and a lesson in trusting God and focusing on what is important. These events brought us to Prescott six years ago where we have continued to watch our two amazing sons-grow into beautiful young men- praise God again and again.

I have always revered police officers and aspired to become one myself. Yet there has always been some obstacle in my path toward achieving that dream. Although my dreams and goals of being a Cop are not likely to come to fruition with the help of God I continue to strive toward those dreams and goals. I am scheduled to complete my bachelor’s degree by March which will allow me become a Probation officer as well as open up other doors in the field of law enforcement.
Some very little known tid-bits about me:* I helped campaign for and shook hands with a sitting president (not the current one) I even worked alongside the Presidential security detail screening rally & fund-raising attendees.* I have argued publicly with Jesse Ventura (made the associated press- ha ha), *had a meet and greet with Donny Osmond and crew back in 1992- remember Soldier of Love? Now you really should be laughing.
* I am a skilled and talented welder who was the only female on a 5 man custom boat fabrication team building fishing boats as well as landing-craft and emergency rescue boats.
I served on a school board, the building committee and taught art at a Lutheran church and school. For 12 years I volunteered and led youth or children in Sunday school groups at three different churches. I created and implemented a horsemanship school of which I was the sole administrator. Mark and I have been homeschooling for going on six years now.

I AM DISCOVERY CHURCH WITH TOBY YORK

DSC09364
My story:
A youth filled with camping, hiking and travel:

Mexico, Canada, Europe, East Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Russia
Lake Powell, Havasupai, Grand Canyon, Colorado river, Top of Half Dome, Bear Valley in Glacier National Park, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, and the list goes on…
Competition biking, climbing, and running
Jobs from selling parts to painting fences on a 75 square mile ranch, to remodeling houses.
A home filled with high achievers. There was plenty of talk about DOING, not much about BEING. God was never mentioned.
Who am I? Toby, husband… Dad… Brother, son, friend, leader.
I have a vision map to guide my DOING that makes me quite proud! Prescott Peaks Real Estate Group, The Hike Shack, PhantomTek Software, Rugged Trail Tours (again someday!), York Co Investments, and Kams Naturals.
Thanks to Kam I’ve learned a lot more about BEING! Over the past fourteen years she has taught me that it’s ok to just stay home on a Saturday and enjoy my family! That dinner is a time to share with each other and catch back up on our days. That meditation and prayer are good for the soul and that Sunday dinner at grandmas puts the world back into perspective!
You see I grew up in a home filled with accomplishments and masters in communication… Except for love. I’ve talked with my father three times in four years. He hasn’t been in my home since 2006. And that was to tell me that he and his NEW wife would not be coming to Thanksgiving, ever.
On the other hand my Mother would cut off her right arm and give it to me if she thought it would help! Without my father, her love now shines free and brightens all of our lives!
I am a newbie to Discovery church, but am jumping in with both feet! I love how raw and true this community is! And I have so much to learn…
August 24th 2013 I learned that I had stage four cancer of the parotid gland that had spread down my neck. September 26th I got to have my first ever surgery. A radical dissection of the parotid and neck removing 40 nodes and tumors.
After surgery, in true Kam fashion we celebrated with a family trip to Disney Land! We all had a great time and Wilson had a blast! Grampi and I rode our motor scooters to keep up and we ended the day with that fantastic parade filled with joy and love!
Back to AZ we interviewed four oncologists before finally finding Sarah Kratz at UofA medical center who believed I could live through this cancer! So we moved to Tucson for three joyous months of Chemo and 33 radiation treatments. Amazingly our time in our little Tucson house was great. I was a bear for Kam to deal with and spent two months in a chair or laying in bed, but it became our sanctuary! Kam is amazing at creating a safe and secure home filled with love and that’s what she did for our cancer battle! We had our daily routine of driving across town for radiation treatment at 11. Then lunch on the go while Ws slept in the back seat. I was able to drive most of the time and we explored our new town a little more each day!
We returned to Prescott in January with high expectations of our “normal” lives, but the brunt of my treatment set in with my white and red blood cell counts crashing in February and March forcing another few months in bed. The left side of my face had been paralyzed from surgery as the main tumor had grown around my facial nerve. Amazingly it regenerated in this time and I could smile and close my eye again!
I’ve had a pretty amazing career so far having sold nearly half a billion dollars in cars, twelve million plus in homes and over two million in outdoor gear. This has been accomplished with so much help and through so may awesome relationships. There have been huge failures and successes! Letdowns, lost relationships, kin ships, and lifelong relationships earned. Looking forward the sky’s the limit. The focus is much more on BEING and on WHO I AM than on DOING!
My big why… That one thing that drives me deeper than anything else, is that when we are 80 Kam and I are sitting on a beautiful deck that we own. We are surrounded by our family who love us and most important… Kam still likes me! We can still talk at dinner and laugh often together in life and love!
Who am I? I’m Toby, Husband, Dad, Brother, Son, Leader… I am Discovery!

Tattoo Part Two

TATTOOED – Part 2
Free From Being Labeled
Pastor Steve Lummer

The Label and the Lid in Luke 7

“A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” Luke 7:37-39 (NIV)

1. Labels DISTORT or DEFINE our identity.

How do we get labeled ?
“People move from making an observation of our behavior to making a judgement about our character .”

DO YOU HAVE A LABEL TABLE? – (3rd grade reading table)
Listening – Believing – Speaking

The labels the world puts on you is based on your BEHAVIOR and PERFORMANCE.
The labels God gives you is based on your IDENTITY and PURPOSE.

The only one who has the right to label you is the one who created you.
“he would know ….what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” vs. 39
“for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Sam. 16:7

2. Lids RESTRAIN or RELEASE our potential.
Vs. 36 – she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume…..she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them

LIDS are the areas of our lives that we refuse to surrender to God.
GO/GROW/GIVE/TRUST?
1 John 1:9 – But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing. (GNT)

The TATTOO of the SOUL.
“Your sins are forgiven” – Luke 7:48

We Can Only Carry So Much.

burden

Reaching Out For Help Blows!

God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble—James 4:6

So, carrying burdens is something for which we are built . . . and something which we are supposed to do, as men. God designed us, built us, intends us—to lend our strength to others, to those who need it. “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). The problem is, most of us read Scripture one way only: that we are to carry burdens for others. Few read it the other way: that we must allow others to carry our burdens too. We don’t really like that reading. That reading causes our pride to rise up.

Like it or not, though, any one of us can carry only so much. Sure, we can “gut it out” with burdens that are too heavy . . . for a while, at least. Before long, however, they begin to grind us down. Anger, anxiety, burnout, depression and despondency, isolation and loneliness, or rebellion and sin emerge . . . simply because we’re neither designed, nor built, nor intended to carry our burdens alone. “One’s pride will bring him low” (Proverbs 29:23).

Okay, so what do we do?
Is there something you’re carrying that’s feeling too heavy? The burden of being a provider? Fears about finances . . . about work? The burden of children living up to expectations, in school, in athletics? A hidden sin? A hidden addiction? Another burden, perhaps?
If so, look around for that person with whom God intends you to share it . . . your friend, your wife. Go to them today. Die to pride. Let them in. Explain the situation and let them respond. Fulfilling the law of Christ also means that we must, sometimes, surrender our pride, surrender the images we have of ourselves, get over ourselves, and ask for help. We are meant to live free and fast and light . . . and together.

Live heavy …Travel light.

Cords Of Three

cords-of-three

CORDS OF THREE
Pastor Steve Lummer
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

Everyone needs a “THIRD PLACE”

First place is our HOME.
Second place is our WORK.
Third place is our COMMUNITY.

THREE COMMUNITY KILLERS
Hurry/Worry/Slurry

First – take seriously the deep human hunger for a third place.

The smells of: Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience, transparency authenticity.
“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” – 2 Corinthians 2:15
Second – remember that “everything matters.”
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. – Colossians 3:13-15
Our goal – not to see THROUGH each other but to see each other THROUGH.

Third – extend our third place into the marketplace.
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. – Colossians 3:16,17
OUR THIRD PLACE
CONNECT WITH  – CARE FOR  – CONTRIBUTE TO

Why should you?

Because we are a MODERN DAY WELL
John 4:13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Here is the video from this weeks message.
