God-sized Dreams

One of the best barometers of spiritual maturity is the size of your dreams! I can accurately estimate the size of your faith by the size of your dream. You can’t be filled with the Spirit and not be filled with God-given dreams! Acts 2:17 says, “I will pour out my spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions and your old men with dream dreams.” Seeing visions and dreaming dreams is a byproduct of being filled with God’s spirit. The more the Spirit the bigger the dreams!

We don’t often think of him in these terms, but Jesus was the quintessential dreamer. No one dreamed bigger dreams than Jesus! He said, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” To appreciate the scope of that dream you have to understand that at that juncture in history, the average person never traveled outside a thirty-five mile radius of their home! And Jesus told twelve relatively poor and uneducated disciples who lived in the middle of nowhere to take the gospel to the ends of the earth! The Great Commission is the biggest dream ever dreamed. I think the size of the dream can only be explained by the fact that Jesus “had the Spirit without limit.” The only limit to how big your dreams are is how full of the Holy Spirit you are. If you’re filled with the Spirit you’ll dream God-sized dreams!

In his book, the vision and the vow, Pete Greig says, “When a vision comes to us not as human aspiration, but as divine revelation – then the whole equation changes.” Human aspirations eventually asphyxiate. There is no spirit to sustain them so they run out of ruach or breath. Greig says, “When a vision is born in the pride of a prayer-less imagination, it is nothing more than a projection of the self.” I don’t put much stock in dreams that are born out of prayerlock, but never underestimate a dream conceived by the Holy Spirit in prayer!

There are four main bones in every organization.

The wish-bones: Wishing somebody would do something about the problem.

The jaw-bones: Doing all the talking but very little else.

The knuckle-bones: Those who knock everything.

The back-bones: Those who carry the brunt of the load and do most of the work.

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.

21 DAY DANIEL FAST – Part 2

21-days-cvr1

Faith is foundational to the Daniel Fast. STEP FOUR: PRAY TO PERCEIVE SIN’S ROLE IN POOR HEALTH –

Notice James 5:13-16:

• Sin is something related to the cause of sickness.
• Lack of health/healing may be the result of spiritual rebellion.
• Lack of health/healing may be due to sin of wrong intake, i.e. drugs, pornography.
• Repentance is linked to health according to James.
• Elders have a role in healing both spiritual and physical health.
• Sick people must desire to be well
• The anointing oil could mean
1. medicine for healing,
2. symbolic of the Holy Spirit, or
3. it could be baptism
• Prayer alone may not gain healing, faith is the major factor.
• In Greek there are several words for “sick”. James uses “Kanino”, which not only includes disease, but also means weak or weary.
• Attitude is important. James said, “are there any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.”

STEP FIVE: FAST AS A STATEMENT OF FAITH TO OTHERS
Daniel was making a statement of faith when he asked for only vegetables to eat and water to drink, then dared the overseer to compare the appearance of the four sons of Israel with the young men who ate the king’s food.

STEP SIX: LEARN THE EFFECTS OF THE FOOD YOU EAT

Why are some foods good for us, and other foods not? What does certain food do to your body? If we really knew, there would likely be some things we would never eat again.STEP SEVEN: YIELD ALL RESULTS TO GOD

Daniel said, “as you see fit, deal with your servants” (Dan. 1:13).

REMEMBER:

• The Daniel Fast will lead to spiritual insight. “to those four young men God gave knowledge”.
• The Daniel Fast is longer than one day. These young men fasted for ten days.
• The Daniel Fast is a partial fast. They ate, but only vegetables and water.
• The Daniel Fast requires abstinence from party or junk foods.
• There is no indication that they ever began to eat the king’s food.

OUR 21 DAY FAST – part 1

21-days-cvr

I love this time of the year because its fresh and our church family joins together for a collective 21 day fast.

Sunday at mid-night our church family will begin our annual 21 day fast that will end on Sunday January 25th.

We will be following again this year the Daniel fast found in the Old Testament book of Daniel.

Here are just a few suggestions if you are interested in joining us on the adventure.

Our body is designed to heal itself. When a disease enters our body from bad dietary habits or from the outside, our bodies begin to fight it. Doctors, surgery, or medicines are most often designed to remove the source of the problem, but the healing is done by the body itself. Many common diseases are easily prevented with basic good nutrition and exercise habits.

STEP ONE: BE SPECIFIC
Daniel was not vague in his objection to the Babylonian diet. He defined the problem immediately.
1. The king’s food was against dietary laws.
2. Daniel and his friends had vowed against wine.
3. The king’s food had been offered up to idols/demons.

STEP TWO: FAST AS A SPIRITUAL COMMITMENT
The Daniel Fast involves a spiritual commitment to God. “Daniel proposed in his heart that he would not defile himself” (Dan. 1:8).

STEP THREE: REFLECT INNER DESIRE BY OUTER DISCIPLINE
Many people have an inner desire for better health, but they can’t discipline themselves to avoid junk food, and other foods that were not good for health. The physical health you seek from God may be more than an answer to prayer. Your physical health may be linked to any of the following factors:
a. Your food choices.
b. The level of your spiritual commitment as reflected in constant prayer during the fast.
c. Your time commitment. If you determine to fast for a certain time, keep it. For example, if you determine to fast 10 days, don’t stop on Day 9.
d. Your testimony commitment. Your fast is a statement of faith to God that you want Him to heal your body.

This is a three part blog. I will post the next four steps and a menu for the Daniel fast in upcoming blogs.

Join us for your own spiritual breakthrough.

NEW SERIES NEW YEAR

I will be starting a new series of messages this Sunday to kick off the new year entitled  “Do The New.”

dothenew

While it is important to have a grip on our history, we cannot allow our history to have a grip on us or let the old hinder the new and the fresh .

For many of us this is a constant challenge.

Jesus teaches us in Luke 5 the importance of Doing the New.

He told them this parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ” Luke 5:36-39 (niv)

Tomas Jefferson said, ” I like the dreams of the future more than the history of the past.”

I also agree with Laura Palmer’s advice, “don’t waste today regretting yesterday instead of making a memory for tomorrow.

I am really looking forward to the new adventure God has for us in 2009.

A GREAT OFFERING SUNDAY!

Sunday  we had an unusual but meaningful gift placed in the offering bucket.

One of our outdoor guys brought an offering  to bless the ministry.

Nick has been a elk  and deer hunter most of his life and this year he was blessed again.

He wanted to share the bounty with us and so here are some pics of the elk and deer offering he brought.

“And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire. ”  Leviticus 2:3 (kjv)

I will never forget last Sunday’s love gift…and I will bless our family with it soon on the grill.

“YOU NEED TO COME AND SEE THIS.”

Yesterday my daughter Natascha called my cell phone on her day off from work and the first sentence was, “dad you need to come and see this”.

She wanted me to come over to a little apartment here in Prescott to see the eight girls from the youth group painting and refurbishing a house for a couple in our city.

Brenda and I walked into a true AOL (Acts Of Love) moment.

The girls where totally having a blast cleaning, caulking and painting this house for a couple in the community that have just started attending the church and getting their lives turned around for the better with a new life change.

Here are some of my real life heroes.

What is really contagious about this is now the church is looking for other ways to help people in our city with real live Acts Of Love….cant wait for the next opportunity.

Thanks girls for the momentum you are adding to this movement in our community.

AOL – (Acts Of Love) reaching, teaching, touching.

During these times of economic meltdowns, it could be so easy to feel bad or become discouraged.

I found out today that there is a way to fight the blues.

It’s called giving!

Wow, it is true…. “it is much more blessed to give than to receive.”

Here are a few photos of today’s launch of our food and clothing ministry.

AOL – ACTS OF LOVE MINISTRIES STARTING UP

On Thursday morning we start up our new food bank ministry to needy families.

pantry

I’m really looking forward to helping serve families in our community  and watching God bless them through our hands.

Christ has called us to begin at home with the message of His love. As Christians, we can fulfill that call personally, in small groups, and as a church. As you look for areas to begin practicing Acts Of Love (AOL), consider starting in your neighborhood and/or apartment complex. This will involve you or your small group intentionally surveying your area and developing AOL steps.

Jesus said “the Kingdom of God is at hand“…I think what he was trying tell us is that the Kingdom of God is not just in another country but in reality it is just a hands length away from each one of us.

The Kingdom of God is at the end of each of our hands.

APOLOGETICS

Last night we had our Let’s Get Legit part two session at Embry-Riddle University here in Prescott.

What a great conversation and dialog around questions of divinity and God.

Here is a picture of our panel and below are the questions students submitted for the panel to discuss.

erau-3

QUESTIONS SUBMITTED BY THE STUDENTS.

1. Is God the same for every religion? If not, what are some of the differences between the major ones? (Catholicism, Islam, Hinduism..)

2. Is it ok to try out or experiment with different religions?

3. My parents are very religious..I feel like that have taught me to be that way…but I feel like my thoughts and opinions conflict with their beliefs…do I have to go to the same church as them?

4. How do we know that the Bible is real and true?

5. What are the differences between evolutionism and creationism. How do these support the Bible, or do they?

6. Who created God?

7. God created everything. So, if He did, that means that He created all of the religions in the world, right?

I really love being able to be legitimately authentic on the university campus… the interaction with the students is amazing.

Our next session will be in the late winter or early spring.

We will be showing the movie “expelled” at ERAU in the next month.
