A VOLUNTEER SPIRIT

Really looking forward to delivering this message this Sunday to the church on volunteerism.

There is an interesting story about he Six Day War – Syria Occupied the Golan Heights that is situated up on a mountain that looks down over the sea of Galilee and the Syrians could just look down and pick the Israelis off with ease. up until the six day war ….

Israel is a nation of citizen soldiers. Every able-bodied man and woman must complete three years of full-time military service, after which time they become reservists serving one month a year in the military until age 50. In a country of only six million or so, it is an enormous drain on the economy each time a reservist is called up from the private sector to serve in the military. At the beginning of Israel’s military incursion into the West Bank two months ago, 20,000 reservists were called up. In the U.S., that is the equivalent of almost 1,100,000 being called. If a few hundred noncombatant volunteers can do the work of a few hundred reservists, the country has a lot to gain economically.

In the nation of Israel and in its history …they have an amazing track record of winning wars

In the time of war every villager is a volunteer…in a time of war ….every able bodied man up to the age of 55 is inlisted in Israel’s army.

Everyone is inlisted…everyone is involved …..They have a volunteer spirit.

We need to have the same mentality in the church …every member is a minister

Every body fights in the battle….every person is a passionate patriot!

This week we open up our food bank ministry to the community and tonight we introduce to our college group our servant evangelism strategy.

Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; – Psalm 110:3

MARRIAGE MINISTRY EXPLAINED

mnf-matters-2

Marriage matters small group lastnight was especially great with a 52 inch screen watching Arizona’s Cardinals barely pull it off in HD.

WOW close one.

A student at Central Bible College had an assignment this past week and ask me to help him with it.

Here is his email to me.

Pastor Lummer, I am having to write a paper on how to have an effective ministry for married couples. Not only that, but I would like to gain some insight on the importance of having such a ministry and the pros/cons of having one.

I sent him our MARRIAGE MATTERS purpose statement and wanted to share it with you on this post.

Purpose. Marriage Ministry at Prescott First Assembly of God

This ministry lives to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit in obedience to the great commission of our Lord.
Objectives. The objectives of this organization shall include, but not be limited to the following:

Promoting God’s plan for marriage through teaching married couples what the Scriptures teach concerning Christian marriage;

Helping individuals to come to a personal, saving knowledge of and trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, “teaching them to observe all things” that Christ commanded;

Betterment of marital and family communications;

Encouragement of couples and families to work toward the ideal in relationships set forth in the Holy Scripture;

Fostering of fellowship, witness, and deep interpersonal sharing in relationships as described in the New Testament;

Providing tools to couples and families for improving their relationship with each other and with God in Christ Jesus;

Gather into fellowship those who will respond and to nurture them.

The Final Test. Does this ministry to married couples work? does it give them a perspective in how life should and  can be lived in obedience to the Holy Spirit while still having a great time doing it.

Marriage is to be a blessing to God’s people, not a burden.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS NEW SERIES

This Sunday we start our new series called; SHINE IN 09′.

shine-ppt

I love the passage of scriture in Psalm 110:3 that says, “Your people shal be volunteers in the day of your power.”

This will be a five week series on investing our lives in the church, the community and the world God has placed us.

One thing I know is that there is no way you can serve God in neutral.

The great thing about serving is that it forces us to get out of neutral and gets us to start living for God at our maximum potential.

Serving is not necessarily about what we DO, but its more about what serviing DOES  to us.

Serving makes a better world and developes us into better people of faith.

LET’S GET LEGIT GOES TO EMBRY-RIDDLE UNIVERSITY

Really looking forward to our two session seminar at Embry-Riddle University that starts next week.

SOME QUESTIONS IN LIFE CANNOT BE ANSWERED BY

Have questions or doubts? Wonder if anyone really has answers…Or if it’s all about asking the right questions? Wondering if questioning the way things are is even ok?

We all ask ourselves these basic, but crucial questions. And the answers you’ve heard can change depending on who you ask. What things about life and the way the world works and our future can we actually know?

For two weeks we’re going to spend some time looking at how the Bible tackles some of these poignant and important questions. Can God’s story and God’s Word be trusted? Start asking questions and come test it out for yourself.

 The two sessions will be presented in two formats.

Week 1 – Questions about Humanity – Monday November 3, 7:00 P.M.

Week 2 – Questions about Divinity – Monday November 17th, 7:00 P.M.

I will be blogging along the way to let you know how this experiment works.

Here is an added photo of our panel people.

The night turned out great!

Great to reconnect with former staff friends

It has been absolutley fanastic to have our former youth pastors Jesse amd Missy Quiorz with us this weekend.

Jess and Missy helped us plant the church in Lake Saint Louis and then moved out to Arizona with us in 2003.

They now serve as administrative pastors at World Harvest Church in Columbus Ohio.

Jess helped me this weekend perform my daughters wedding as well as two out of the park messages today at Prescott First Assembly.

Our relationaship with these guys is indiscribable and beyond words.

Brenda and I love them deeply.

Generation Xtraordinary

My youth pastor had it right when he said;

“It easier to build boys and girls than it is to repair men and women.” – Bill Wilson

Our college small group was awesome tonight. The room was full of possiblilty and opportunity for the future.

We are going through the book Chasing Daylight by Erwin Mcmanus.

This age group is full of life and expectancy with a touch of reserve and caution but still they are full of faith.

“Your faithfulness endures to all GENERATIONS”. Psalm 119:90

PROXIMITY

I love that scripture.

I think the key is the “with God” part.

That little preposition. with” is the greek word παρά (para). It means to be beside, near or in close proximity.

This morning in my time of prayer it was like the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said the most important thing is not just the mission, but having a nearness to God in the mission.

Proximity is a place of nearness.

Whenever we take on a God – sized challenge, proximity to God is not optional.

With God all things are possible.

LIVING IN TERRA INCOGNITO LAND

Anyone  feeling a little  vunerable or uncertain about our culture?

I heard a commentator the other day say something that I think connected with a lot of people.

He said, ” “we are in uncharted territory as a Nation.”

Yesterday as a Nation, we celebrated a National holiday in memory of Christopher Columbus.

Columbus was very familiar with “uncharted territory.”

Mark Batterson writes in his newest book, Wild Goose Chase these words. “In Washington D.C. there is a statute of Christopher Columbus. Beneath the statue there is a plaque that says; “To Christopher Columbus whose high faith and indomitable courage gave man kind a new world.”

TERRA INCOGNITO – Cartographers used to write terra incognito on the edge of medieval maps. A few brave souls sailed off the map into uncharted waters and discovered a new world. Terra incognito is the Latin term for “unknown land”, used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented. The equivalent on French maps would be terres inconnues , and some English maps may show Parts Unknown.Naysayers and doomsdayers believed that if you ventured too far into unknown territory, you would either fall off the edge of the world or run into two-headed dragons. But that didn’t keep Columbus from venturing into uncharted waters”..

I love this quote.

People cannot discover new lands until they have the courage to lose sight of the shore”. – andre gide

So if you are feeling like you have never felt before, it could be that you are discovering something new, something uncharted.

One thing is for sure, Terra incognito keeps life from becoming a bore.

Abraham or anyone elso for that matter who has ever walked in faith lives in Terra Incognito land most of the time.

By faith Abraham ….went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 (esv)

ARE YOU A BASKETCASE?

Really looking forward to this weekend’s message; “Are You A Basketcase?”

I think many of us in the nation are feeling a bit basketcase prone these days.

In a nutshell, you can tell if you are a basketcase if you are in any situation where you feel pressed down and stressed out; yet deep within you know that God is in control.

I’m looking at Moses in the Old testament and Paul in the New testament and comparing both basketcases to our lives today.

Can’t wait to develop this message and see what God does with it.
